The Starting Line: (Re)Discovering Your Inner Athlete
The Starting Line: (Re)Discovering Your Inner Athlete
Written for the middle-aged woman who is too busy and too tired to exercise, and who may have never exercised in her life, The Starting Line strives to turn these women into athletes. The book is divided into three sections: strength training, running, and nutrition; each section speaks the language of the novice and educates the reader to feel confident in identifying herself as an athlete by the time she is done with the book.
Whether the weight gain is from having babies or being in menopause — or just being too busy with other commitments — the women who read this book will become educated, motivated, inspired and empowered to lose weight because they will feel good about their bodies again. So many exercise books on the shelves right now look to give people the “body transformation recipe,” which is fabulous (I teach a body transformation program myself), but unless the reader identifies themselves by the end of the book as an athlete, they won’t keep exercise in their lives, and they won’t enjoy exercise; they’ll still be doing it because they have to instead of because they want to. This book gets them to want to exercise.
The Starting Line shares strength training, running, and nutrition techniques that make fitness attainable, palatable, easy to understand, and enjoyable. By detailing unique steps — and sharing stories and personal insights — the author shows non-athletes that exercise can be fun, and that they, too, have an athlete hidden within.
Most out-of-shape people want to change. They want to be fit. Some of the reasons they don’t try to get fit are that they lack confidence, direction, guidance, and belief. When people find these qualities within or are supported, they can and will become an active participant in a fitness program. The Starting Line helps provide this impetus for them.
“Kristen improved the quality of my life. She helped me discover the athlete within me. She taught me to change the way I fueled my body. She brought out the thin person hidden beneath the layers of fat.
When I started working out with Kristen, I weighed 220 pounds. My blood pressure was out of control. I couldn’t walk to the mailbox without breathing heavily. Less than a year later, I weigh 160 pounds, down 60 pounds; my blood pressure is a healthy 128/74; I’ve biked a century (100 kilometers), run a half marathon (13.1 miles), and hiked half way to Half Dome in Yosemite. I can even see the muscles that help me do all this. Most importantly, I can go hiking, biking, running, kayaking, climbing, or just walking with my friends.
Kristen helped me find me again. And she made it all fun!”

What exercises can I do while pregnant?
I honestly wasn’t a big exerciser before I got pregnant. I would get on my Wii Fit 3-5 times a week and do mostly yoga and some strength training.Otherwise my exercises all came from chasing my toddler around and doing housework.
I gained a bit of weight during my last pregnancy and lost all but 20 pounds of it.
I want to know what I can do while pregnant to tone up and lose weight that’s safe for me and the baby.
Thanks in advance!

What are good sports/exercises to develop hamstrings?
I was recently told that I’m quad-dominant. I know I need to stretch my hamstrings, as they are a bit tight, but I’m also wondering what sports/exercises will work the hamstrings. I hate weight lifting, so I’m looking for something different than strength training. Would yoga help? Running? Roller skating maybe?
Thanks.
