12 Viniyoga is not Real Yoga

Yogi Erich Schiffmann interviewed by Tony Wolff, Part 12 of 16. I’m sorry for all the confusion this title has caused. My statement was NOT that “Viniyoga is not real yoga.” The questioner (Tony) used that phrase in his (barely audible) question to me. He was saying that some people he knew were judgmental toward Viniyoga and did not consider it as “real” or as strenuous as Iyengar yoga, for example, or Ashtanga. Tony and I were laughing at that notion! I’m sorry that was not more obvious. I thought it was clear. Only the title was actually misleading. But it does catch people’s attention. I have nothing but respect for Krishnamacharya and his teaching, and I am one of the few people I know who has actually met him. I began studying with Desikachar in 1973 in Madras. I especially admire Krishnamacharya’s teaching because he was not intent on making clones of himself. He lit the fire of yoga in his students. Iyengar got it and his teaching flourished as Iyengar yoga. Pattabhi Jois got it and his teaching flourished as Ashtanaga yoga. Desikachar got it and his teaching flourished as what was once called Viniyoga. Again, sorry for the confusion. If you watch the video, you will see I was actually making a case FOR them.
